Members of the Mayo Disabled Persons Organisation (DPO) addressed yesterday’s monthly meeting of Ballina Municipal District.
The delegation included Avril Graham – a wheelchair user, Rebecca Connor Wood –a woman with autism, and John Connor – a man with the hidden disability of epilepsy.
They shared their lived experience with the meeting in an effort to make decision makers like council officials and elected councillors more aware of their needs in terms of infrastructure in our towns and villages.
Ballina has been designated as an Autism Friendly Town working with the Ireland’s Autism charity, AsIAm.
At yesterday’s meeting, councillors unanimously agreed with a motion proposed by councillor Annie Mae Reape, for the authority to bestow a reception on ‘Ballina Autism Friendly Town’ group on the official recognition of Ballina as the county’s first Autism Friendly Town.
