A Mayo Deputy has raised the issue of the increase in the broadcasting levy in the Dáil.
The levy – which applies to all independent radio stations – has increased 69% over the past two years.
An analysis by the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland equates the price hike to more than 1.5 million euro.
Officials from Coimisiún na Meán and the Department of Communications were recently questioned about the increase by the Oireachtas Media Committee.
While the Department said they were “concerned” about the increase, they said there was nothing they could do about the regulator’s decision.
Coimisiún na Meán said the increase in the levy was driven by higher pay costs, increased professional fees for research and legal advice, and the inclusion of a provision for working capital.
