Mayo County Council backs Irish Unity

Mayo’s local representatives are to write to the office of An Taoiseach, asking the Irish Government to plan and prepare for Irish Unity.

It comes after a motion was brought forward at this week’s meeting of Mayo County Council by Sinn Féin Councillor Gerry Murray, concerning the matter.

He asked that the Council recognise that the reunification of Ireland is an objective of the Constitution, and that there is a possibility of Irish unity in the future.

There was cross-party support for the motion during Monday’s meeting.

The Council wants the Government to set up measures such as an all-island representative Citizen’s Assembly, and a Joint Oireachtas Committee on Irish unity.

Charlestown Councillor Murray says that outreach and engagement are vital to this process, something which he says his party has been active in for some time.
