Man arrested in Mayo following drugs seizure

A premises in Castlebar has been searched and a man has been arrested following an operation by Gardaí.

In total, over €2 million in controlled drugs were seized.

The Garda operation forms part of Operation Tara, an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy.

Gardaí targeted a number of identified business premises nationwide involved in the sale of vapes.

Personnel attached to the Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau, Customs Revenue Service, and Drugs Units based in Longford, Mayo, Roscommon, Kildare, and Drogheda were involved in the operation.

Searches were conducted on the 2nd and 8th of July of this year at five business premises and two residential premises in Castlebar, Longford, Drogheda and Carlow.

As a result, over €2m worth of cannabis-infused jellies, cannabis oil-infused vapes, and ‘reefer’ cigarettes containing HHC and THC were seized.

Two men, aged in their 30s, were arrested in Mayo and Longford and are being detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996 at Garda stations in the Midlands.

Gardaí have said the substances will be forwarded to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis.

Investigations are ongoing.
