“Lucky escape” for the west from Storm Éowyn

Researchers at the University of Galway say parts of the west coast had a “lucky escape” from severe flooding during Storm Éowyn.

The weather event at the end of January generated the highest storm surges ever recorded here.

Among the highest recorded were at Shannon Airport and Limerick Docks – where they reached almost three metres.

Dr. Indiana Olbert from University of Galway’s School of Science and Engineering says these huge storm surges happened when the tides were ebbing back towards the sea:
