The lower VAT rate on electricity is set to be extended.

The higher 13.5% rate was due to come into force again on the first of May.

Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe is proposing to extend the 9% rate for a further six months, at a cost of €85 million to the state.

The move extends the rate cut to the end of October, and any further extension will be considered as part of the budget.
