Irish representatives in Europe are being urged to keep fighting and save CAP funding for farmers.

The European Commission has announced a 20 per cent drop in resources for the sector as part of the 2 trillion euro budget for 2028 to 2034.

The IFA has described the announcement as a hammer blow with farmers receiving a pension set to lose their right to funding altogether.

The Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon will open the first meeting of the CAP Consultation Committee this morning following the announcement.

Commenting on the proposed new structure for the delivery of CAP, MEP for this region Luke Flanagan was critical of the approach taken by the Commission.

The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) as we know it look set for a major overhaul he said.

In the next programming period it is proposed to be merged into a single National & Regional Partnership Fund, (NRPF).

This one overarching fund will encompass all EU funding drawn down by a member state.

Mep Flanagan says it is still early doors in the whole process.
