Irish households pay an average of €360 more per year on electricity bills than the western EU average.
That’s according to a report by the Nevin Economic Research Institute, a think tank backed by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.
It said that between January 1996 and September 2025, Irish electricity prices increased fourfold – more than double the increase in inflation for consumer prices during the same period.
The report noted a “close link” between wholesale electricity costs and natural gas prices and a “historic underinvestment” in network infrastructure as key factors.
