Ireland dearest in EU for alcohol and tobacco

Tobacco and alcohol prices are high because of their associated health costs, according to an economist.

It comes as new Eurostat figures show Ireland is second to Denmark as the most expensive country in the European Union, with prices just over 38 per cent above the average.

Alcohol and tobacco prices are the most expensive in the EU, at 205 per cent of the average.

Economist Austin Hughes, says it’s due to the these products’ impact on public health.
