Six alleged illegal turf cutting sites are under investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in County Roscommon.
As reported by the Roscommon Herald, the matters are have now been referred to Roscommon County Council, who has enforcement jurisdiction in the area.
A spokesperson for the EPA told the paper that “The EPA has issued a Proposed Direction under Section 63(5) of the EPA Act, 1992 as amended, to Roscommon County Council requesting the submission of enforcement plans in relation to peat extraction sites”.
A report will be published by the EPA in the coming weeks, addressing alleged illegal peat extraction in more detail.
These comments were made following the publication of its Industrial and Waste License Enforcement Summary 2024 report last week, which reveals EPA enforcement activities across industrial and waste sites.
