Sligo University Hospital and University Hospital Galway were among the most overcrowded facilities in the country in May.
The two hospitals, which both treated over 750 patients on trolleys, chairs, or in other inappropriate bed spaces, were the 4th and 5th most overcrowded hospitals in May.
Over 9,800 patients were not treated on beds last month, according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.
General Secretary of the INMO Phil Ní Sheaghdha said; “It is clear the political system needs to act and introduce vital legislation to underpin safe nurse and midwife staffing [levels]”.
