Hauliers have called off a protest planned for today, after what they call a “last minute intervention from Government”.

The Irish Road Haulage Association has threatened rolling protests blocking major areas, routes and airports, unless the government suspends the carbon tax due to mounting fuel costs.

The Association says Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien rang its president, Ger Hyland, from Rio de Janeiro yesterday evening, and his department has set up a face-to-face meeting upon the minister’s return from Brazil.

Ger Hyland says the association is willing to hear the government out and meet without pre-conditions, with a view to resolving what is fast becoming one of the biggest crises to face the haulage industry in 20 years.
