US-based infrastructure investment firm AVAIO Digital has been given the green light by Mayo County Council to construct a data centre in Killala.

The planned data centre, to be located in the Killala Business Park, ,  will be a two-story building covering more than  29,000 sqm. When finalised, the data centre campus will provide 36 MW capacity on the 66-acre property.

It is estimated that when the site is fully developed that there will be up to 32 staff on-site per shift. The rotational shift system consists of three shifts over a 24-hour period.

In a statement to Midwest News, AVAIO Digital has welcomed the decision by the local authority to grant it planning permission at its Data Centre campus in Killala…

“The announcement to grant planning permission for our County Mayo Data Hub campus is a welcome step in creating a new economic opportunity in the West of Ireland.

The project, planned for the Killala Business Park, will create more than 300 jobs during construction and provide a basis for more sustainable development of this industrial site on an ongoing basis.

The Mayo Data Hub will support AI and cloud development in the West and provide unique employment opportunities through planned partnerships with Irish universities, creating new data centre-focused curricula and supporting research in the uses of artificial intelligence across multiple sectors.

AVAIO’s highly-sustainable design will leverage the abundant wind energy in the West, much of which is often curtailed during windy periods due to the lack of adequate transmission infrastructure – providing an economic use for these otherwise wasted green electrons on the former Asahi industrial site in Killala.

The campus will provide a significant boost to the economy of Mayo and to the West in general. We look forward to partnering with the community as we take this project to the next stages with construction planned to commence in early 2026″.
