Galway Senator wants funding for stone walls

A Galway based Senator has called on both the Agricultural and Heritage Ministers to provide funding for dry stone walls on the west coast of Ireland that have suffered the damage of Storm Éowyn.

Senator PJ Murphy is seeking a financial assistance package for farmers and local authorities to ensure that the historic and iconic stone walls of Mayo, Galway, Clare, Roscommon and the Aran Islands are restored and rebuilt.

He says that the walls are in tatters six weeks after the storm, and believes that the walls deserve the same recognition as the Georgian houses of Dublin and Limerick get as part of our Irish heritage.
