Cllr. James Charity has confirmed that he has joined the Fine Gael party and will sit on Galway County Council as a Fine Gael Councillor for the remainder of the current Council term.

Cllr. Charity says last Wednesday, he spoke with the Tánaiste Simon Harris who confirmed his admission to the party and welcomed him to the party.

This followed the adoption of a resolution by the national Executive Council of Fine Gael last Tuesday night to approve my membership.

He says he will remain as committed as ever to the dedicated representation of my locality, the Municipal District of Athenry-Oranmore, and the wider County of Galway, and will continue to represent constituents and voters without fear or favour.

Commenting on his reasons for joining Fine Gael, Cllr. Charity says ahead of the Local Elections in 2024, he had announced intentions to stand down from local politics as he felt he had achieved as much as he could for his area as an Independent Councillor.

However, he subsequently reversed the decision to step down once it became clear that no other local candidate was going to come forward.

He says while work continues as normal on the ground and within the constituency, but joining Fine Gael now gives access to some of the most senior Ministers and political figures in the State and within Government, and to really put the issues that matter to Galway residents on the political landscape at the highest levels.
