A packed public meeting in Foxford last night totally rejected one of a number of proposals to address the serious traffic issues and controversial pedestrian crossing in Foxford town centre.
The proposals to address serious safety concerns for pedestrians and all road users in the town centre, have been set out by Mayo Roads Design Team with approval from Transport Infrastructure Ireland TII.
One of the proposals includes the axing of the right turn in the town centre, from the N58 Ballyvary to Foxford road onto the N26 Foxford to Swinford road and as a result push traffic heading for Swinford down two local roads in the town – Lower Main St and Providence Rd to get back on to the N26.
However, those two local roads, include four campuses of St Joseph’s Secondary School, the Foxford Woollen Mills, Hope House – the sporting facilities in the town, the Post Office and local residents.
This proposal was strongly objected to last night at the public meeting, and at today’s monthly meeting of the Claremorris / Swinford Municipal District, Foxford councillor Neil Cruise raised the community’s serious concerns over the proposal describing it as “absurd”
He asked council officials to make a strong submission to both the Roads Design Team and TII to reject the proposal. However, in response council officials said they do not make submissions to themselves – but will be assessing the submissions coming in on all options proposed.
Submissions can be made on the proposals for the pedestrian crossing and traffic congestion in the town centre to Mayo County Council until Friday next.
