A fire along a road in Achill earlier this week,  that was brought under control by the fire brigade, posed a serious risk to the environment and to local properties.

That’s according to James Kilbane of the Achill IFA commonage fire group.

The blaze caused damage to the commonage along the main road at Polranny on Tuesday last ,29th April, at about 2 pm.

The fire brigade attended the scene and successfully fought the fire.

“It appears to have started on the roadside, most likely by a discarded cigarette from an passers-by in a car or some motor, probably unknown to the culprit” James told Midwest News

“The fire was spreading into the wider commonage and it was only meters away from private dwellings”.
