A wildfire in west Mayo on Saturday night is being investigated.
Wild Nephin National Park has had to close the Claggan Mountain Coastal Trail due to the impacts of the fire.
The trail, which was severely damaged, will remain closed until further notice.
Ballycroy Community Council posted on its facebook page that the cleanup and repair works cannot commence until the investigation is completed.
They described heartbreaking scenes at Claggan Mountain yesterday morning as the aftermath of the wildfire became plain to see.
The Claggan Mountain Coastal Trail is a popular trail, with over 12,000 people enjoying it last year.
“It’s a place used by schoolchildren and groups to learn about our bogs, and families can enjoy a day out surrounded by breathtaking views.
We would like to thank the Ballycroy Tidy Towns committee for their support and all involved in dealing with the fire on Saturday night”.
Local Fine Gael councillor Gerry Coyle says this was the only wheelchair accessible walk in any National Park in the country, and he says its devastating to see the damage done.
