Farmers reps. urge government to oppose Mercosur

Farmers representatives are urging the government to step up its opposition within the European Union against the Mercosur trade deal.

The agreement between the EU and South America was struck last December, decades after negotiations were launched.

It now requires qualified majority support from European governments for it to be ratified.

There are concerns over the impact the importation of beef from markets like Brazil will have on the farming sector here.

Irish Farmers Association President, Francie Gorman has been telling Midwest News that he is urging the  Government to step up and make their point clear to their European counterparts that they firmly oppose this deal…
