There’s excitement in west Mayo with the election  of Mark Carney as the Prime Minister of Canada.

The former Bank of England governor is succeeding  Justin Trudeau as the country’s Prime Minister.

A number of Mr Carney’s grandparents hail from Aughagower in county Mayo – it has not been confirmed whether that number is two or three grandparents.

Dr Deirdre Giblin is the Chairperson of the Ireland Canada Business Association and she told Midwest News today that Mr Carney has travelled on an Irish passport for the last thirty years.

He has a map of Aughagower on his office wall. He received the map last December from the current Ambassador to Canada from Ireland, John Concannon.

Dr Giblin is pretty sure that Mark Carney has been to county Mayo but says she’ll confirm that later this week as she is due to meet him on a trade delegation to Canada.

Deirdre has been speaking to Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley about the excitement in Canada on Mark Carney’s new position…
