County Mayo man Mark McMahon was announced a University of Galway winner at the Future Timber Design Awards ─ a new initiative by Forest Industries Ireland (FII), supported by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

Developed by FII to promote sustainable and innovative timber construction and design, The Future Timber Design Awards celebrate bridging academic learning with real-life application for undergraduate students of engineering, architecture and related courses at the University of Galway and TU Dublin.

Mark, a Master of Engineering (Civil) student at the University of Galway, has been awarded an Honourable Mention for his project in the Best 3D Visuals, which has explored the potential of timber as a primary structural and architectural material.

As part of the project, Mark was required to focus on using homegrown timber as the key structural material, keeping in mind design constraints and other real-world challenges.
