Emergency services came to the rescue of a dog on the Mayo coast earlier this week, who became trapped at the base of a steep cliff.

Achill Island Coast Guard received a call on Wednesday evening and were tasked at 7:53pm to Belmullet.

The owner of the dog made the call to emergency services after their pet got trapped at the base of the steep cliff.

Achill Island Coast Guard’s volunteer Search & Rescue Cliff Team set a technical rope climb, and their barrow boy was able to reach the dog and safely secure it. From there, the haul team brought them both safely back to the top.

Ballyglass Coast Guard Search and Drone Unit also assisted in the rescue, which concluded at approximately 1:26am.

In a post on Facebook, Achill Island Coast Guard said:

“A great outcome for this four-legged adventurer and an important reminder: please never put yourself at risk attempting a rescue. Call the Coast Guard, it’s what we’re trained for!

“If you see anyone in difficulty on the sea, shore, or cliffs, dial 112/999 or call on VHF Ch 16 and ask for the Coast Guard.”
