The European Commission has confirmed an emergency funding pathway can be made available for urgent works on harbours and piers. Roonagh pier, located outside Louisburgh, is at present designated as requiring urgent attention
Independent Ireland MEP Ciaran Mullooly and Louisburgh-based Councilor Chris Maxwell are in Brussels this week, specifically pleading the case for funding for Roonagh Harbour, as well as facilities on Clare Island and Inisturk.
The harbour, located off Louisburgh, is in serious decline, and was left in a much worse state following damage from Storm Éowyn earlier this year.
Midlands North-West MEP Mullooly has said the harbour “is splitting in half”. He insists that if the Irish government organises a framework for funding, there are funds available from the EU commission for improvement works
