Eight further sets of infant remains have been recovered from the site of the former Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, as excavation works progress.
77 individuals have now so far been recovered since works began in the summer of last year.
The eight newest individuals recovered, between April and May, were all buried in coffins.
In today’s update, the Office of the Director of Authorised Intervention in Tuam (ODAIT) says most of these were found in an area which was marked as a burial ground on older maps.
The ODAIT says separate or ‘disarticulated’ bones were discovered and not associated with burials already recovered.
Excavation works between April and May focused on two parts of the site, one of which contains a “subterranean vaulted structure”.
It’s believed the structure formed part of a wastewater management system during the site’s workhouse era between 1841 and 1918. However it has yet to be established whether or not this operated while the home was run between 1925 and 1961.
The ODAIT, as well as carrying out the excavation, is identifying the remains found and if possible returning them to family members concerned.
