The topic of laneway ownership and responsibility of laneway up-keep has become a topic of confusion in Westport, according to one local Councillor.
A recent meeting of the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District heard discussions on the ownership of laneways which provide pedestrian access to a number of council car parks in Westport town.
Councillor Peter Flynn has said the condition of these laneways is worsening, with slippy unclean surfaces and uneven surfacing. It’s feared these are conditions which could lead to someone falling or seriously injuring themselves.
In a response to a question from Councillor Flynn, the Council said they would not be undertaking responsibility for these laneways or carrying out cleanup works, as they are supposedly in private ownership.
However, the Councillor told the meeting that a business owner who owns one of the mentioned laneways could produce documentation, proving it was the responsibility of the MD to guarantee the upkeep of the laneway leading to the car park next to it.
