Death has taken place of poet with Mayo roots

Paul Durcan Poet

Paul Durcan, one of Ireland’s most renowned contemporary poets, has died at the age of 80.

He was born in Dublin in 1944 and spent much time in his parents’ home county of Mayo.

The President Michael D Higgins said It is with the “greatest sorrow that I have heard of the passing of Paul Durcan, one of Ireland’s most important poets, and a close friend for over 50 years”.
Taoiseach Michael Martin says he is “deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the poet’s death, he was one of Ireland’s outstanding poets and literary figures”
Paul Durcan began his written work 60 years ago with his first book ‘Endsville’, which was followed by more than 20 others.
