A local MEP has criticised the US administration’s actions towards Greenland as well as plans to implement tariffs on European countries against America taking over the territory.
Fianna Fáil MEP for Midlands North-West Barry Cowen said in the European Parliament last night (Monday) that “this sort of behaviour emboldens our adversaries and strains our alliances”.
US President Donald Trump says the US needs Greenland for security purposes and has not ruled out using force to obtain the Arctic island.
MEP Cowen said that this is a “test of whether law still matters, whether alliances still matter and whether Europe is prepared to defend them”.
