A Westport-based councilor has suggested he is considering “taking a case to Europe” over a river cleanup in Kilmeena.
Independent Councilor John O’Malley says that for the past ten years, he has been seeking progress on a cleanup operation for the Mayour River, which experiences high levels of flooding due to stagnant water.
In a report that was delivered to Westport-Belmullet Councilors in September of this year, Mayo County Council indicated they would engage with Inland Fisheries Ireland to begin a cleanup of the Mayour River.
The report also suggested the Council would proceed with a cleanup of the downstream section, but that the upstream would need “significant funding”.
Councilor O’Malley now says that water trapped in the river, as well as trees growing in the waters is leading to flooding with pollutants making their way into the stream.
He has been speaking this lunchtime with Midwest Radio’s Rowan Kelly, about a process he says is taking far too long…
