Frustrated, delayed motorists approaching Ballina from the Foxford side will be hoping that later today, the closure of a filter lane of traffic at the traffic lights at the Font, might be scheduled for re-opening.

It has been closed for a number of months and traffic congestion appears since, to have intensified on this approach to Ballina from the N26 side.

The issue will be discussed at today’s monthly meeting of Ballina Municipal District. It was raised at Monday’s monthly meeting of Mayo County Council by Crossmolina-based Fianna Fáil councillor Michael Loftus.

He will be raising it again at today’s district meeting, where all elected councillors appear to be concerned about the filter lane closure and have sought statistics from council management as to what the closure is achieving.

The section of street affected runs from the Bus station in Ballina to the traffic lights at the Font, where traffic can turn left onto the N59 or continue into the town and it accommodates a number of busy access and exits from medical centres and pharmacies.

Councillor Loftus spoke to Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley about the problem….
