Yesterday’s Monthly Meeting of Mayo County Council heard that the number of Gardaí stationed in County Mayo has reduced by 4.5% in the last few years.
Speaking at yesterday’s meeting in Bonniconlon, Chief Superintendent of the Mayo/ Roscommon/ Longford Garda Division, Ray McMahon, admitted to councillors that there is an issue with ‘man power’ in the county.
While Mayo receives merely a fraction of the Garda allocation from Templemore that can be found in, for example, Dublin City, Chief Supt McMahon says that more experienced Gardaí are coming here instead.
New recruits, he explained, are stationed in bigger areas of the country after their graduation, which allows Gardaí with more experience to relocate to counties like Mayo and Galway.
