There is concern among many people in Erris, over the number of wind farms planned for the region.
That’s according to Councillor and Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council Seán Carey who made the comments during a discussion on the local authority’s renewable strategy.
Nearly 400MW of wind energy is generated in Mayo, with over 100MW generated in the Belmullet Municipal District. However, Councillor Carey pointed out that despite this output, Mayo still sees frequent power outages.
He gave an example how last Thursday, there was a breeze in the air around 11pm and power was cut in Ennis.
The Cathaoirleach says there is a disconnect between people and wind projects, when energy customers have such a poor experience with their energy and the grid itself, as well as environmental and noise pollution concerns.
