A community on the Mayo-Galway border have expressed their concern at a proposed wind farm in their area.
The Rooaunalaghta Green Energy Project is planned for a site within the Joyce Country & Western Lakes UNESCO Global Geopark.
However, the local community have said that it would be an inappropriate development in an area recognised for its geological and environmental significance.
On Monday, Mayo County Council members will vote on a draft strategy that currently designates the area as “Unsuitable” for wind development due to landscape, ecological, recreational, and heritage constraints, the same day that An Coiminiún Pleanála will decide on the early-stage pre-application case regarding the project.
Spokesperson for the community Don Langan has been speaking on this morning’s Tommy Marren Show, and he was asked if this was a case of supporting wind turbines, but just not in their own back garden…
In a statement to Midwest Radio News, Rooaunalaghta Green Energy said; “The Rooaunalaghta Green Energy project is one of many proposed renewable energy projects across Ireland, which will harness Ireland’s great wind resource, enable a move away from fossil fuels, and reduce harmful emissions. The proposed project would play a key role in supporting the Government’s Climate Action Plan, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 51% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
