There are renewed calls for deal to be struck up between Mayo County Council and Castlebar Celtic, regarding the old swimming pool in the county town.
The pool, closed since 2019, is in the ownership of the local authority, and it was proposed last year by local councillor Cyril Burke that the facility be sold or leased to Celtic, to help the club deal with its constantly growing membership.
At a Municipal District meeting last November, Head of the Castlebar MD David Mellett informed council members that a valuation of the building and asbestos survey was complete, and issues between the council and club had been clarified.
Castlebar Celtic, according to Fine Gael cllr Burke, are entitled to funding to develop the pool, but they need to be leasing or in ownership of the premises to apply.
Therefore, he is calling on Mayo County Council to complete the deal with the club, who needs to cater for over 25 teams with, in the region of, 300 members.
