Call to abolish third level student fees

Castlebar based county councillor Harry Barrett is calling on Simon Harris to deliver on a pre-election commitment to abolish college fees for third level students.

The Independent councillor says it’s simply not acceptable that students and their parents are instead  now  facing a 1000 euro increase in college fees for the upcoming academic year.

Students and colleges are meet ing with the Higher Education Minister today to discuss options to reduce college fees.

The ‘cost of education’ event comes after James Lawless announced they were moving away from the one thousand euro reduction seen in recent years.

Stakeholders will discuss alternative methods to cut the cost in Croke Park today, feeding into an options paper for the budgetary process.
