The Post Office in Breaffy, Castlebar will close its door to customers for the last time this evening (Friday), at approx 4pm.

Breaffy Post Office has been run by Postmistress Patricia Curry and her husband Kevin for the last 24 years.

Patricia is past retirement age, and has decided to retire now and while An Post advertised the service some months ago, there were no applicants to carry on the post office service in the busy village of Breaffy, Castlebar.

The Curry’s have been in business in Breaffy between a shop and a post office for the last 37 years. The shop closed two years ago.

Catherine Walsh worked as an assistant in the Breaffy Post Office for more than two decades.

Customers were notified of the closure some time ago by Patricia, in an effort to allow them to choose the post office that they wished to transfer to.

The majority of the Breaffy customers have moved their accounts to Balla and Ballyvary Post Offices.

Patricia told Midwest News that today is “a bitter sweet day”. She said they enjoyed serving the local community and described it “as a great privilege” to serve the community both in the shop and Post Office.
