Investigations are ongoing into a wildfire which severely damaged the Claggan Mountain Coastal Trail at the Wild Nephin National Park over the weekend.
The trail will remain closed until further notice as a result.
Clean-up and repair works, according to Ballycroy Community Council, cannot commence until the investigation is complete.
A popular tourist trail, the Claggan Mountain Coastal Trail attracted over 12,000 visitors last year alone.
Mayo Minister Dara Calleary has described the situation as “shocking” and says that he is working with his Fianna Fáil colleagues on Mayo County Council, cllrs Paul McNamara & Sean Carey, to get the trail back open as soon as possible.
