The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has begun a ballot of its members in the Emergency Department of University Hospital Galway in response to what it describes as “untenable” workloads and unsafe conditions arising from staffing deficits.
The union says that since July the HSE has failed to take seriously the staffing deficits in the Emergency Department and the impact on the ability of nurses to provide a safe service to patients.
INMO Assistant Director of Industrial Relations, Mary Fogarty says the situation in the Galway ED is the result of a number of decisions and short-term solutions that do not take into account safety, care standards or staff wellbeing.
She has been giving more details to Midwest Radio’s Michael D. McAndrew.
