A public protest will take place this afternoon in Ballaghaderreen.

The protest comes in response to the planned public realm project in the town, which will see the removal of a number of car parking spaces within the town centre.

There are concerns over the accessibility in the town following the project and that it may reduce footfall for businesses, with 47 car parking spaces understood to be removed.

Up to 50 retailers have been taking part in rolling protests throughout the week, with over 520 submissions made to Roscommon County Council in response to the plans.

The council have described the plans as a ‘once in a lifetime transformational opportunity’.

A public rally will be held at 3:30pm today, beginning at the square.
