Appointment cancellations increase by 42% at MUH

Government figures show that over 280,000 appointments were cancelled in Irish hospitals in 2024.

The 281,996 cancellations is an increase on the 2023 figure, which stood at 267,426. The figures were provided in a parliamentary reply to Aontú.

On average, more than 722 appointments were cancelled across the country each day last year, and the number continues to grow with more than 700,000 currently on waiting lists for treatments and surgeries.

The Irish Independent has today reported that the 300,000 barrier for appointment cancellations could be broken in 2025.

Mayo University Hospital saw an increase of almost 42% (41.7%) in cancellations. 915 appointments were cancelled at the hospital in 2023, while in 2024 the amount increased to 1,297.

Galway University Hospital saw an increase of 12%, while Portiuncla University Hospital’s cancellations increased by almost 10%.

Sligo University Hospital and Roscommon University Hospital saw their figures decrease by 18% and 8% respectively.
