High number of homeless children in the west

Figures from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage show that during the week of March 24-30 2025, 429 adults were accessing emergency accommodation across Mayo, Galway and Roscommon.

Of these adults, 237 were male and 192 were female. 61% of adults in emergency accommodation in Ireland are male.

Most homeless adults in the region are in the 25-44 age bracket. The figure of 208 makes up 48% of the total. The 18-24 and 45-64 age brackets make up just under a quarter, while 5% are aged 65 and over.

Of the 429 registered as homeless in the region, 320 are Irish.

Taking in both City and County Councils, Galway has the most homeless adults in the region with 265. There are 149 adults in emergency accommodation in Mayo, and 15 in Roscommon.

The north west region, including Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal, has 169 adults registered as homeless with 82 in Sligo alone.

Finally, there are currently 119 families across Mayo, Galway and Roscommon in emergency accommodation, with 64 single parent families. This includes 183 adults and 229 children – the  largest region for homeless children outside of Dublin.
