Plans to construct an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant near to Ballinrobe have received a boost this week as Mayo County Council has granted planning permission to the project, subject to conditions.
The AD process sees micro-organisms break down organic matter in an oxygen free environment, producing biogas that comprises mainly methane as well as carbon dioxide.
Local pig farmer John Sheridan and Nephin Renewable Gas – Ballinrobe Limited submitted the planning application in July 2024.
The proposed site is approximately 4.4ha in size, with the ability to accommodate 90,000 tonnes of locally sourced manure/ slurry, whole crop silage and other organic materials to produce biomethane.
According to the application, 71 local farmers are willing to supply feedstock to the proposed plant, with the development involving the construction of three digesters of around 16m in height, two digestate storage structures, two pump houses and two liquid feed tanks.
An article from Agriland also details that the plans also include pasteurisation tanks, solid digestate storage and a nutrient recovery building, odour abatement plant, ESB substation and a two-storey office and administration building.
The development would be located in the townlands of Levally, Cappacurry and Knockadrimna, and aims to create employment opportunities in the locality with approximately 75 full time positions.
