Castlebar councillors are demanding  action by Mayo County Council on a large “ghost estate” on the Ballinrobe Road, in the county town.

Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne again raised the matter at this week’s monthly meeting of Mayo County Council.

He says with 200 people being provided emergency accommodation by the local authority at present in the county that it makes no sense to leave a large housing estate empty and in a derelict state at the edge of Castlebar.

The issue of the ghost estate has long been highlighted by Castlebar councillors – asking council officials to act on the site that clearly appears derelict and vacant.

The councillor says for more than a decade now Mayo County Council is talking to the developer regarding the development and nothing has happened.

He told Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley action is now needed… the time for talking is long gone….
