Only seven percent of disqualified drivers handed back their license and permits last year.

Statistics released from the Department of Transport show that out of 7,817 drivers that received a disqualification, just 580 surrendered their license.

It is a requirement under the Road Traffic Act to surrender your license to the Road Safety Authority if you receive a disqualification.

A number of counties fell below the national average, with just 4% of motorists in Dublin complying.

Almost one in five drivers in Leitrim surrendered their license after being banned from the road.

14%, or 27 or the 198 Mayo drivers who were disqualified, surrendered their license.

The figures in other Connacht counties fell similar, with Galway’s figure at 8%, while Sligo and Roscommon were at 9 and 10% respectively.
