In handball news, the World Wallball Championships drew to a close yesterday (Friday) in Limerick.
Mayo players were involved in three matches on Finals day. All three went to nail-biting tiebreakers.
In the Ladies A Singles final, Belcarra's Cuileann Bourke agonisingly lost to Tyrone's Caitlin Conway when she had the title virtually within her reach.
Cuileann bounced back later in the day in the Ladies A Doubles final, where she teamed up with Armagh's Cailíosa Ní Dhúill to take on Team USA pairing Shena Brown and Samantha Torres. With that match tied at World Championship point each, Cuileann drove out a hard serve and then emphatically killed the return to win it, cueing scenes of joy and relief for the Mayo supporters in attendance.
In the Over-40s Doubles Final, Swinford's Ollie Cassidy and Claremorris' Dessie Keegan performed really well in a hugely entertaining battle against the Kerry/Armagh pairing of Dominick Lynch and James Doyle, but unfortunately fell narrowly short in the tiebreaker.
The highlight of the day for the large crowd in attendance was Limerick's Martina McMahon winning the Ladies Open World Wallball title, while 22-year old New Yorker Naz Marston 'wowed' spectators with an amazing exhibition of skill and athleticism to capture the Mens Open title.
Overall, it was a very successful week for Mayo handballers, who contested three Cup finals and four Plate finals, coming home with a haul of one gold, three silver and four bronze medals from the World Wallball Championships.
Next up will be the World 40 x 20 Handball Championships, which Ireland will also host later this year.
