It’s Day 3 of the World Handball Championships in Limerick today.
A big day for Mayo with 14 handballers in action including Darragh Ruane back home from the United Arab Emirates.
Yesterday, Mark Heneghan put in very impressive performances, losing by a single point to Japan’s Naoki Tomokiyo and then beating Leigh Tiley of Wales.
Today will see many of Mayo’s top wallballers in action, with Cuileann Bourke, Paddy Murphy, Niall Joyce, Ollie Cassidy, Tom Sweeney, Shane Heraty, Ian McLoughlin and Darragh Ruane among our hopefuls.
Michael Lang and Michael Corley are also both in action, but will have it all to do against very highly seeded opponents.
Bofield’s Wayne Devine and Aidan McNulty have a chance to progress in the Mens C Plate competition.
Young Aodhán Tonra from Belcarra will take on Sligo’s Travis Gibbons, while veteran George Miller faces Antrim opposition.
There were very emotional scenes in the arena yesterday when Ballymote’s Cormac Finn battled from four game points down to beat his highly fancied opponent Mikel Emaldi from the Basque Country in the Mens Open.
Cormac dedicated the win to his grandfather Padraig who passed away suddenly a few hours previously.
This morning, Cormac lost very narrowly to World #2 seed but the hugely talented young Sligo man can be immensely proud of his performances at his first World Singles Championships.
Later in the week he will partner Galway’s Mikey Kelly in Doubles as he represents Team Ireland against international opposition.
