The National Masters Outdoors Championships took place in Tullamore on Sunday (August 4). Almost 500 athletes competed in track and field competitions across an action-packed eight-hour schedule.
Sunday’s competition came hot on the heels of a wonderful night at Morton Stadium earlier in the week, where three new World Master Women’s 4x800m Relay Records were broken on the final night of The Dublin Graded Track Series. Mags Glavey Mayo AC helped the Irish relay team to a new World W70 4x800m record.
Fresh from that success Mags was one of the Mayo AC competitors at Tullamore. On the track they competed in sprints, relays, and middle distance races, and three competed in field events.
There was a wonderful silver for Christian Macrae in the M60 400m. And a bronze for Keith Conroy in M45 100m where John Walkin M40 finished in 12:65 – joint third but .002 slower – missing out on bronze.
Mags Glavey won two gold medals in 800m and 1500m – a great way to end the week! And her 800m time was only a second slower than her relay split last Wednesday.
In the field Brendan Staunton M40 led the club's versatile throwers with success claiming two silver in discus and hammer – and gold in the shot put.
Martin Peyton M70 won three medals- silver in discus, gold in hammer, and bronze javelin.
And in the final event of the day the 4x100m relay team won silver - great running by John Walkin, Keith Conroy, Gerry Kirrane, John Brennan.
That’s a total of four gold, five silver and a bronze -
Well done to all Mayo AC competitors today, and Congratulations to the medal winners!
