Tubbercurry’s Liam Kerrigan could shortly be sharing a dressing room with one of the most successful footballers of the current generation.
Kerrigan plays for Como who recently gained promotion to the Serie A, Italy’s top flight, and has returned from a loan deal with third division side Novara.
Under the management of former Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas, Como gained promotion last season and have had a busy transfer market so far.
Former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina and defender Alberto Moreno are among those who have joined ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
The big story coming out of Como this week is that they are on the brink of signing former Manchester United and Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.
A World Cup winner with France in 2018, Varane became a free agent this year after his contract with United expired.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano, credited with being one of if not the first to break news on the most topical transfers in modern football, says that the transfer documents are ‘ready and set to be signed’.
It is understood, according to Romano, that Varane will sign a two year deal until June of 2026 with the option of staying until 2027.
Liam Kerrigan moved to Como in July 2022 after his career brought him locally from Real Tubber, onto Sligo Rovers and then UCD.
He scored on his league debut for Como in August of that year, before tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in September which kept him out for the most part of a year.
His move to Novara for the second half of last season benefited Kerrigan with more regular first team playing time while he fully recovered.
Como begin their league campaign on August 19 against none other than Juventus.
