Belmullet’s Ryan O’Donoghue is the first of the Mayo senior footballers to depart of a summer in the United States.
The Championship top scorer has signed with John McBrides in Chicago on a J1 Transfer Sanction.
The McBrides club held a strong Mayo representation in 2022 in particular, after Mayo lost to Kerry in the All Ireland quarter final.
Clubs in the United States are allowed to sign players up until the deadline of July 1 which is this coming Monday.
No other Mayo footballers have signed with American clubs as of yet following the Derry defeat, but there is the possibility of more joining O’Donoghue stateside as the Mayo club championship does not get underway for another 7 weeks.
MayoGAA.com have detailed that the opening round of the Mayo Senior Football Championship begins on the weekend of August 16 2024.
