The famous Gaelic Games commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh has passed away.
He was one of the most distinctive characters and voices in the history of Irish sport.
At the age of 93, it has been confirmed this hour that he died this morning in the Mater Hospital, Dublin.
Mr. Ó Muircheartaigh was borh in Dún Síon, just outside of Dingle, Co. Kerry.
He worked as a teacher up until the mid 1980s, before becoming a full time broadcaster with RTÉ.
His first post in RTÉ was to provide an all-Irish commentary on the Railway Cup Final of 1949, played on St. Patrick’s Day.
Following the retirement of Míchael O’Hehir in 1985, Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh took over as RTÉ Radio 1’s premier radio commentator.
His last All-Ireland Final commentary came in 2010 when Cork defeated Down in the football decider, and he then retired from broadcasting that October.
