Kerry were 0-7 0-5 up at the break, with the aforementioned Clifford and Sean O'Shea to the fore in the first half.
Sam Callinan popped up with good scores for Mayo, as did Ryan O'Donoghue.
Jack Carney provided a key moment for Mayo just before the break with a huge diving block preventing a sure score.
